What you will get out of this article: An understanding on how to actually use the classic self help wisdom "you're the average of the five people you hang out with the most"

A friend brought this to my attention a couple of days ago. Something that I have consistently done for the last 6-7 years of my life.

I choose a person worthy of admiration. It could be a certain trait that I like, a skillset, mindset, character etc. I choose the person and devour everything about them. All their interviews, content, books. Every day I will watch them if possible.

This idea stems from one of self-helps most well known quotes:

"You're the average of the five people you hang out with the most".

Look at the five people you are always around. You are the average of them.

This involves finances. Physical fitness. Mental toughness. Status.

If you add your 5 friends' yearly incomes, you make the average of that amount.

This idea makes sense. Evolutionary, we have always been a social animal. Our position in the 'tribe' matters to us on a deep level.

And, if we remove the societal PC bullshit. It's obvious that we want to be great.

The example we consistently use is playing a video game. If you were to create a character in the game. Would you want 100/100 wealth? 100/100 body? 100/100 mind power? 100/100 relationships?

Obviously.

So, if we want to be great. To improve our current status and power.

We MUST hang out with people that reflect the future us.

This is where all that feel good self help advice ends. As anyone that has attempted to upgrade their friend's circle knows...it's tough.

First, ditching your friends completely is something only a cult follower would do. Yes, of course, leave the emotional vampires. But upgrading your friends doesn't necessarily mean destroying your entire relationship foundations.

So how do we upgrade our social circle?

This is where the advice ends. Most "gurus" will offer you a mastermind for $997 a month.  Masterminds work, and if you can find one you trust. That is a great way to be surrounded by powerful humans.

But, the other way. And this is what I've been doing for years now. Is studying someone so deeply, that their message becomes installed into my mind.

Right now, it's Jocko Willink. An ex-Navy Seal commander, leadership expert with a brilliant podcast about human nature.

Every day I've listened to a minimum of 10 minutes of this guy. Most days 1 hour+.

A week later, Jocko is in my mind influencing my decisions. When my impulse to snooze my alarm pops up, I hear Jocko's voice to get after it. When something terrible happens in my day, I hear Jocko's voice saying "GOOD". He's become part of my 5 influencing people and I've never met him.

This is the power of social media. Platforms like Youtube.

You get access to some of the most brilliant minds on whatever topic you desire. It's time for you to consciously take advantage.

Think about an area in your life that you would like to improve.

Health/Wealth/Faith/Body/Mindset/Business

Find someone that is proven and resonates with you.

Listen to them every day for a minimum of 10 minutes for 30 days+.

Start taking advantage of this power available to you.

That's why here at Declare War Within we call it transformation through repeated exposure to greatness.

1. Decide what area you want to improve on.

2. Find someone that is truly worthy of admiration and devour their content.

3. For a minimum of 30 days listen to them. Take notes and implement their advice.

4. Every couple of months refer back to them to keep their message fresh in your mind.

Upgrade the people you let into your mind and witness your life transform.
